Thailand welcomes U.S. Senate Resolution honoring King Bhumibol Adulyadej

Two nations marked 184th anniversary of diplomatic relations and friendship

The Royal Thai Embassy warmly welcomes the adoption of a historic U.S. Senate resolution honoring His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand who was a trusted friend of the United States and a strong supporter of an enduring Thai-U.S. alliance and partnership throughout his 70-year reign.

The Embassy deeply appreciates the solidarity and friendship extended to the Royal Family and the people of Thailand by the U.S. Senate, and the message of congratulation to His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn on his accession to the throne.

The Embassy shares the wish of the U.S. Senate to build on a strong foundation of alliance nurtured during the reign of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and further deepen the bonds of friendship between the two nations and peoples.

The adoption of Senate Resolution 9 on March 15, 2017 came at an opportune time as the two nations marked the 184th anniversary of the diplomatic relations on March 20, 2017. The Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the Kingdom of Siam and the United States was signed on March 20, 1833 in Bangkok. It was the first treaty that the United States concluded with an Asian nation.

The resolution “Honoring in praise and remembrance the extraordinary life, steady leadership, and remarkable, 70-year reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand” reflects the long-lasting friendship between the U.S. Congress and His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and recently passed away on October 13, 2016.

On June 29, 1960, His Majesty addressed a Joint Session of the U.S. Congress, during which he reaffirmed the strong friendship and goodwill between Thailand and the United States.

The resolution is a fitting recognition of the immense contribution of His Majesty to the growth and strength of the alliance between Thailand and the United States. It also acknowledges his life-long dedication to the well-being of the Thai people of all backgrounds and the sustainable development of Thailand, which earned him the deep reverence of the Thai people and respect from abroad.

The Royal Thai Embassy is deeply grateful to Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah, President Pro Tempore of the U.S. Senate, for his initiative and leadership which led to the unanimous adoption of this historic resolution.

The Embassy also appreciates the bipartisan support received from many co-sponsors of this resolution: Senator John McCain of Arizona; Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island; Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas; Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona; Senator Cory Gardner of Colorado; Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island; Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas; and Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois.

This message of goodwill from the U.S. legislative branch profoundly touches the hearts of the people of Thailand and the Thai-American communities throughout the United States, and will further enhance the everlasting friendship between the two nations and peoples.
